ADA adopts three programs to fight climate change in Riyadh

‏

Climate change is a growing threat to the whole world, which witnesses abnormal climate phenomena such as the unprecedented rise in temperatures, rainfall and storms. In this context, the High Committee for Environment Protection in Riyadh adopted the Execution Plan for Environment Protection in Riyadh City, which comprises six main axes:

  • Air quality management
  • Waste management
  • Natural resources management and biodiversity
  • Water and soil resources management
  • Sustainable environmental management and development
  • Climate change

The axis of “climate change” included three programs, carried out in cooperation with public and private agencies, to deal with the impacts of climate change as follows:

Study of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:

The study aims at developing a comprehensive plan to manage these emissions, and establish a system for monitoring their sources and controlling their effects, in addition to conducting carbon impact assessment to help reduce temperature in the city.

Study of abnormal climatic conditions:

This program seeks to conduct a comprehensive study on the current and future abnormal climatic conditions including temperature, wind and rain in order to develop a schedule for assessment of the improvements achieved.

Study of the carbon emissions’ increase in the city of Riyadh:

This program seeks to rationalize energy consumption, and to achieve optimal utilization of energy resources, including all types of fuel and electricity through conducting a study on the rise of carbon emissions in Riyadh, application of the thermal insulation program, etc.

The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh carries out these programs in collaboration with a group of national agencies and programs including:

  • The National Committee for the Clean Development Mechanism
  • he National Program for Energy Efficiency
  • King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology
  • The General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection
